Breakfast was almost finished when I heard Rosie start crying. Cameron sat at the table sipping his cup of coffee and offered to get her from bed while I iced the cinnamon rolls and put them onto plates. It felt odd not going to get my own child out of bed, but it was nice to have the help. In fact, it felt so different having Cameron in the house when I woke up that I almost slipped and called him Dustin once, which I covered by asking a stupid question. “Dust—the cinnamon rolls with icing or douse?” I shuddered at how horrible it was.

“Mommy, Camyin here?” Rosie screwed up her face and pushed her curly hair out of her eyes as he carried her toward me. He smiled like an idiot as he set her in her high chair.

“Yes, Rosie. Cameron is here for breakfast. Isn’t that nice?” I set her breakfast in front of her along with a cup of milk.

“Camyin eat cimum roll too?” She picked at the icing with her fingers and plunged them into her mouth, licking the sticky-sweet confection from them. “They so good.”

These were normal moments for me, the type I often overlooked because they happened every morning. Rosie was nearly three, so she was adorable at all times, but when someone else observed her cuteness and pointed it out, it made it all the more real for me. One day, she wouldn’t be this little and these moments would be gone.

“I love how she says my name.” Cameron sat at the table again and accepted the plate and napkin I set in front of him before taking my own seat. He wasn’t shy, digging into the cinnamon roll with his hand instead of using a fork—just the way Dustin used to. He took a giant bite and groaned his appreciation as he chewed and set the roll back on his plate. Rosie giggled.

“Camyin sound like bear, Mommy.” She licked her fingers again. I notice she had icing in her hair now and smeared across her face. She hadn’t taken a single bite of the actual breading, but she was enjoying herself, so I didn’t fuss with her. It was something my mother would have had fits about—Rosie eating straight sugar for breakfast with no nutrition.

I, however, had a different philosophy. Rosie ate healthy food three meals a day, usually seven days a week. If she wanted to eat a treat instead of a meal now and then, I knew it wouldn’t hurt. I believed it might make her enjoy the treats for what they were and teach her that sometimes, a tiny indulgence might lend a hand in self-care.

“You like your cinnamon rolls, Rosie?” Cameron wiped his mouth and watched her tearing the roll apart to get to the gooey cinnamon sugar in the middle. She grinned and nodded.

“I wike.” Once she had stuck her finger in her mouth and licked it clean she said, “I wike Camyin too. You come pway wif me.
